William Robert "Bill" Bates, of Tullahoma, passed this life Monday, December 23rd, 2013, at his home in Tullahoma at the age of 93. Mr. Bates was born in Nashville, TN, to the late James Edward and Virginia Buchanan Bates. In Nashville he attended Montgomery Bell Academy and Vanderbilt University, where he played football the 1943 season. He began his professional career as an Aeronautical Engineer working at Langley Field in Virginia before marrying his first wife, Vonnie Burch Bates, and returning to Tennessee, where he taught and coached at Madison High School in Nashville. During this time, he helped run the Youth Incorporated Camp during the summers. He then came to Tullahoma to work at AEDC in various functions (AERO, Foreign Technology, a manager on ASTF, and finally as a project manager rebuilding the destroyed J5 facility). In addition to his working career, he was an active volunteer coaching youth sports, refereeing high school football for over 20 years, and serving on the Board of Directors of Harton Hospital and AEDC Federal Credit Union (now Ascend). Bill helped manage the construction of the 3rd floor of Harton Hospital, and the renovation of Lakewood Country Club. In 2010, Mr. Bates became an AEDC Fellow, when he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr.Bates was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Vonnie, brother, James E. Bates Jr.; sister, Nelle Butts and her husband Sam; and brother-in-law, Bob Hunt. Mr. Bates is survived by his wife of 30 years, Bertha Morgan Bates of Tullahoma; two sons, Bobby Bates and his wife Brenda of Tullahoma, and Michael Bates and his wife Mary Lynne of Atlanta; two daughters, Barbara Bates-Timko and her husband Ron of Hermitage, TN; and Patricia(Trish)Butler and her husband Michael of Franklin; two step-sons, Roger Morgan and Jeff Morgan and his wife Vickie also of Tullahoma; 12 grandchildren, William Robert "Billy" Bates III, Allison Bates, Alex Bates, Preston Bates, Carson Dickey, Trevor Dickey, Emma Butler, Jennifer Black, Courtney Parker, Bailey Morgan, Amanda Monroe, and Catrina Morgan; eight great-grandchildren, Alexis, Cali, Carrie, Ian, Abigail, Trace, Jaycee, and Levi and sister-in-law, Betty Hunt. Visitation for Mr. Bates will be held on Saturday, December 28th, 2013, at Kilgore Funeral Home from 3:30 pm-8:00 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 29th, at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Ashley officiating. The family suggests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church 208 West Lauderdale Street, Tullahoma, TN 37388, or a charity of your choice with emphasis on youth. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Rotary.
